Leland S. Kollmorgen
"Spirit of Innovation Award"
Past Award Recipients
2009: Glenn Wilson, Ph.D.
At the 2009 HFES meeting, Lauren Reinerman-Jones, Ph.D., presented ACTG's 3rd annual Spirit of Innovation Award to Glenn Wilson, Ph.D. The award was named in honor of Leland S. Kollmorgen, a legend within the AugCog field, highly respected for his insights, energy, and dedication to his profession and his country. The award recognizes exceptional scientists and engineers who have made substantial and innovative contributions to AugCog. In RADM Kollmorgen's own words: "It is certainly a pleasure to see Glenn's significant contributions to AugCog being recognized by his peers. Glenn qualifies as an AugCog pioneer and worthy contributor to the success of the program. His technical expertise was sought by several of the AugCoger's (if that is a word) as he made the first successful EEG "neuro-gauges' for measuring cognitive workload in real time. This was a significant contribution to the program. His work with fNIR made it possible for a Boeing to integrate that device into the Cognitive Helmet for the Boeing–AFRL Wright Pat Team. The streamlined helmet became a hallmark of sorts for the team. It was through Glenn's interest and support that this team was forged and successful... Glenn, Well Done!
2008: Denny Proffit, Ph.D., and the late Randy Pausch, Ph.D.
At the September 2008 HFES annual meeting, the ACTG organized its first official program, which featured the presentation of the 2nd annual Leland S. Kollmorgen Spirit of Innovation Award, given to Denny Proffitt, Ph.D., and the late Randy Pausch, Ph.D., in recognition of their individual and combined impacts to the field of Augmented Cognition. Instituted by the ACTG in honor of RA DM Leland S. Kollmorgen(Ret.), the Spirit of Innovation Award recognizes exceptional scientists and engineers who have made substantial and innovative contributions to AugCog. Proffitt’s and Pausch’s technical leadership with the initial DARPA Information Science and Technology(ISAT ) study (which became the launching point for the eventual DARPA AugCog-based program) was a primary catalyst in building the foundation of the now burgeoning field of AugCog. Their InfoCockpit prototype, experimental studies, and metrics enabled clear articulation of the vision of AugCog system architectures, and their endeavors extended the boundaries of human-systems computing. Individually and in partnership, Proffitt and Pausch have given true inspiration to the AugCog field. RA DM Leland S. Kollmorgen and CDR Dylan Schmorrow, Ph.D., (AugCog innovators, themselves) presented the award at the ACTG Business Meeting on September 24, 2008.
2007: CMDR Dylan Schmorrow, Ph.D.
Commander Dylan Schmorrow of the U.S. Office of Naval Research became the first recipient of the Leland S. Kollmorgen Spirit of Innovation Award, presented by the Human Factors and Ergonomics Society (HFES) on October 2. The officers of the HFES Augmented Cognition Technical Group selected Schmorrow for this award, which was presented at the 4th Augmented Cognition International Conference in Baltimore. The award is named in honor of retired Navy Rear Admiral Leland S. Kollmorgen, a former Chief of Naval Research. It recognizes exceptional scientists and engineers who have made substantial and innovative contributions to the field of Augmented Cognition. CDR Schmorrow, who holds a Ph.D. in experimental psychology from Western Michigan University and is the founder of this new scientific discipline, was an obvious choice for the inaugural honor. He is the founder and chairman of the Augmented Cognition International Society. Researchers in augmented cognition use computing technologies to extend the abilities of individuals to manage information. They study human limitations in attention, memory, learning, comprehension, visualization abilities, and decision making.
